News
It's been a while since I wrote a blog post for mymusictheory- I just noticed that the last one was about Christmas presents, so this post is long overdue!
What's been happening with the site?
Membership is growing steadily - as I write we have 944 registered users of the site - thank you all for your interest and support! Likewise the Facebook MyMusicTheory fanpage is constantly growing and just passed the 300 fans mark! If you haven't registered or "liked" us yet, you might be wondering what the point is. If you register as a member (free) you will receive irregular emails about updates to the site, for example when a new course is published or old materials are updated. You need to be a registered member if you want to buy any downloads. If you become a fan on Facebook, you'll also get news and links related to music and music theory, including news of worldwide projects, competitions and innovations.
New material on the site
We recently published the exercises for the grade 4 music theory course, which means that we now have the whole of grades 1-5 covered in terms of courses and exercises. A lot of people email me asking when grade 6 (or 7 & 8) are going to be finished, and the answer is always "how long is a piece of string!" I work on the site whenever I get a moment, but I find myself with less and less free time, having two small children! For those desperate to get started with grade 6 and needing some assistance, don' t forget you can always ask questions in the mymusictheory forum, or you could use our paid marking service to have your work corrected.

Finally I'd like to recommend a book I finished reading recently:

Book Recommendations
Finally I'd like to recommend a book I finished reading recently:
| The Singing Neanderthals by Steven Mithen This book examines where music and song come from, from an evolutionary point of view. What use is music for the survival of our species - why did we evolve to be able to sing and dance, and to experience emotion through music, when no other mammals appear to have these traits? What connection do music and language have, and which came first? It's a fascinating look into the past and very well written. Suitable for anyone aged 15+ who has an interest in music. |

What's on the Forum?
Questions
Launched today, 14th Feb 2010, the forum is the new home for any questions directed at mymusictheory.com. I get a lot of questions emailed to me, and don't usually get time to write everything up in html to add to the web page (although I do reply by email!). Having the questions on a forum turns them into a searchable database, which is good for everyone, and it's much more convenient. Askers can respond to my answers and read back on the posts in a more logical way.
Also, other users will be able to add to the discussion - either with their own answers or further questions. All posts are moderated, so no idiotic answers will be allowed up, you'll be pleased to know. No registration is currently required to post in the Questions forum.
General Theory
The general section is for any registered user to start any thread connected with music theory. Serious or light-hearted, join in and make your voice heard!
Chat
Make friends or contacts with others who are studying the same level as you. Chat about anything you like, but please remember the forum is for all ages, children included. Please don't give out personal details, and kids, tell your parents what you're doing. (Any posts which violate the rules will be deleted without warning.)
Music Theory Diaries
Nowhere else on the web will you find a space dedicated to your study of music theory! Start your own thread which is your "diary" of music theory learning. Keep track of what you're studying, bookmark useful links, ask questions, ask for opinions, share stories -it's up to you. You own your thread and can use it as you like. It's an excellent way of recording what you're doing, getting input from others in the same situation or from teachers, and you can review whenever you like - it's a wonderful revision tool.
Come and register now at www.mymusictheory.com/forum/ - it's free and simple to join. Don't forget, we only launched this afternoon so we don't have many members yet - please don't let that put you off!

Grade Six Music Theory Course - Update
The first part of the long-awaited grade six music theory course is now available online from mymusictheory.com.

What with one thing and another, the release of the grade six course is taking a little longer than anticipated. So, instead of waiting until the course is complete before uploading it to the public, I've decided to release it in sections as they become ready, in order to have the material accessible more quickly.
The grade six theory exam is divided into three parts - harmony, composition and general knowledge. The grade six course follows these divisions. Today I've published the first part of the course, which covers basic harmony.
This will be followed very shortly by a section on figured bass and melodic decoration, followed by composition, and finally a section on general knowledge.
The accompanying exercises will also go up on the site, with the option to download, as usual.

UK Music Theory Exams Approach!
The ABRSM music theory exams take place this Saturday 20th June at 10am. Are you ready?!
Good luck to all of you who are taking a theory exam this session! Don't forget that mymusictheory offers you a free "ask a question" service - so if you have any last minute panics just send an email to questions@mymusictheory.com - I usually manage to respond within a few hours. I've already had a lot of emails in the last few days - please keep them coming!
One or two people have asked me recently why I don't charge for this service: and the answer is that I just simply enjoy helping people out. I get all kinds of questions - some simple, some complicated, some bizarre and some down-right silly, but I do endeavour to answer them all. If I manage to help a few people grab a few extra marks in their exam, (or better still get a merit or distinction), then I feel like I've done something useful. I love to hear from candidates who have passed their theory exams with good scores after using my lessons or asking questions by email.
News from me is that I have a new arrival in my family - my baby son Edward was born on 23rd May and is happy and healthy. Lucky for you lot, this means I'm at home most of the time, so I have plenty of time for answering your questions!
Looking forward to hearing all about Saturday's exams - good luck again if you're taking part!

New Music Theory Downloads Available
New on the site for May 2009: COMPLETE MUSIC THEORY COURSE DOWNLOADS
www.mymusictheory.com is pleased to announce that the entire courses for Grades 1 and 5 are now available for download.
Prepared as print-quality pdf files, these eBooks mean you can have the complete course downloaded to your home PC for easy offline access or to print out.
They have been designed with printing in mind - all images are black and white, adverts and links have been removed, and a contents page has been added. When accessed on your computer, the pdfs will be fully searchable.
The Grade One Music Theory Course contains the entire course, and is priced at £1.50 (63 pages).
The Grade Five Music Theory Course is about twice as long, and has been split into two parts. Part one (55 pages) contains lessons 1-7, and part two (51 pages) contains lessons 8-15. You can purchase each part separately for £1.50 each, or buy them together for a 5% discount at £2.85.

Grade Two Lessons are Online Now

Mymusictheory is pleased to announce to blog-readers that the Grade Two Music Theory Course is now available online. The course is an easy step up from Grade One and contains everything you need to know in order to do well in the ABRSM's Grade 2 Exam.
New topics in Grade 2 include the introduction of the minor scale, triplets, rewriting music in a new time signature and of course more foreign terms! Grade 2 builds on the knowledge you gained in Grade 1.
Although all the lessons for grade 2 are complete, the exercises for the lessons are in progress - I'm currently up to lesson 6 and trying to get some new exercises up every day when possible. The complete practice test will be the last page up, and please bear in mind that there are currently no links to Grade 2 from the old site - so bookmark the page!
If you want to access the exercises before the whole set is complete, you'll need to log in with the following information:

As always, I'd greatly appreciate any feedback on the new material. Please don't tell me about broken links though - I am aware that there will be lots until the whole course and exercises are up and functional. Please do tell me if you spot any mistakes, don't understand the lesson or feel that something has been missed out, for example!

Grade Five Theory of Music Free Practice Exam
I can finally (!) announce that the "missing link" of Lesson 16, Grade Five Music Theory Practice Exam is now up, live and waiting for you to get stuck in!
The practice test is based on the ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory examination, but all of the actual material was created by mymusictheory.
The test is free - you can do it online and check your answers as you go along - just hover your mouse over either the staff or light bulb icon, and the answers will be revealed to you. You can print off some blank music manuscript paper to jot down your answers as you go along.There are 7 questions, just like in the real test.
Most of the questions do require you to write some notes or other musical symbols (like clefs or time signatures), so for your convenience, the test can also be printed off to use at home. www.mymusictheory.com is now offering the complete practice exam as part of the Grade Five Theory Complete Exercises download. This means you get 68 A4 pages of Grade 5 Music Theory exercises, with suggested answers, including the entire grade five theory test. All the blank manuscript you need is included in the pack, and it is designed to be printer friendly (i.e. black and white, and with no annoying ads or menus on the page!).
For a limited time, I'm also accepting composition answers for free marking - either composition for voice or for instrument. This applies to the composition questions in the practice exam, as well as in the general exercises for writing melodies. Email your answers to info@mymusictheory.com if you'd like a free grading. Marked compositions will be returned to you as well as published on the site (anonymously unless you prefer to be named ;) (Please note, I don't promise to mark ALL submissions - only the lucky few).

New Style Update
All the Grade One and Grade Five music theory lessons have now been cleaned up and are showing off the new decor. Next up will be the exercises for each grade, and I'm aware that a few of the pages are currently broken (the answers don't show up when you mouse-over the questions), so I'll be fixing them too. The long-awaited Grade Five Practice Exam will also be up very soon!

New Style for My Music Theory
If you've looked at the Grade One lessons recently, you might have noticed that we've gone all posh and decorated the site yet again! It's not just cosmetic, we've tidied up a lot of the code behind the pages, so hopefully there will be no more problems with displaying the pages on any browser. Grade One is all done, and I'm now plodding through Grade Five - it's pretty messy back there in the dark world of html code, so it's a bit slow, but hopefully Grade Five will be up, all shiny and new soon too.

My Music Theory Blog is Born!
Mymusictheory.com is a free online resource for anyone interested in music theory. The website consists of free lessons which are designed for students who are taking the ABRSM music theory exams, but they're also used by a whole host of other people from hobby musicians to music students.
This blog has been set up to announce news and developments for the site, and also as a place for me to write more general articles about music and music theory.
While the website is great for studying music theory in a structured way, this blog will provide a platform for other, related topics, which don't necessarily fit into the ABRSM syllabus.
So, without further ado, on to the first news item!
Mymusictheory.com has been experiencing problems with the guestbook. To be honest, I can't figure out why it isn't working, as it lets me write comments for myself, but obviously that's not much fun... If you have any comments and can't get them up on the guestbook, please send them to info@mymusictheory.com - thanks!
Mymusictheory.com will soon be boasting a whole new Grade Two music theory course. I've had a lot of requests for Grade Six, (and it's nice to see the enthusiasm of so many students after tackling Grade Five!), so Grade Six will be next on the agenda.
